Windows 10 Build 15002 - A big but messy update

With a rare Monday release, Microsoft released build 15002 for the Creators Update over a month after the 14986 build on Dec 7.  This was a PC only build.

15002 contains a very large number of updates to Edge, Ink, Cortana, Settings, Input Method Editor (IME), etc, etc. It also introduced new start folder capabilities that had been available in Mobile.  The build also contained over 20 fixes to known issues.

This is the second release that leveraged MS's new deployment approach that utilizes a differential update approach to in theory shorten update cycles.

What I experienced with both traditional desktop and tablet updates was that although the download phase of the update got to 100% quicker.  It stayed at 100% for quite some time before moving onto the preparation phase.   The prep phase along with the configuration and working phases took the same time as they were local to the machine.   All in all the update still took between 50 minutes and 70 minutes depending on machine, so I can't say this new method is of any great value.

On my PC, I've already experienced several notable errors.  For example, clicking on the notifications icon did not open the notifications area immediately. In fact it took several attempts, then all of sudden worked.

I also ran into an issue with sound on my PC.   I noticed that sound had stopped working with all of my "native" apps - so Groove, Movies & TV, Fox Sports, Netflix, etc. However it was working with browsers, either Edge or Chrome as well as iTunes.

I ran the Playback device tests and all came back ok.   However I did noticed that the Realtek drivers were version 2.8 dated 6/2012.   I downloaded the latest 6.2 drivers from the Realtek site and updated and then all worked fine.

The tablet had no issues.  So not sure if the Windows 10 upgrade process did not properly identify the Realtek chipset properly and loaded an older driver set or had stepped on some sound dll.

I've also experienced some app freezing, for example Mail & Calendar, Settings and Store, where the app froze at the logo, much like what was happening with an earlier build.   The good news is that subsequent launches of the app were successful.

Unlike other major update builds, there were not a large number of associated store app updates.  In my case only OneNote, Messaging and Paid WiFI & Cellular updated.

One thing is very true.  My overall experience with the Creators Update when compared to the Anniversary build has not changed dramatically   As I've stated in earlier posts, if you have a Surface Pro, Surface Book or a shiny new Surface Studio, then yes you will see improvements, but with either my desktop or tablet, the value to the Creators update is very limited.

And when you experience issues with parts of the OS that have been very stable for months, it makes it difficult to understand where value is being added.

Bottom line is that Windows 10 Creators Update is back on build pace and so we'll see if we return to the weekly build release model.
