Smartphone Market Share Q2 2019 - Apple Continues it's slide

This post is only about 2 months late but back at the end of July IDC posted their Quarterly Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker Report.

 The top 5 remain in the same order with Samsung 1st followed by Huawei, Apple, Xaiomi and Oppo...

 Huawei is still growing very rapidly with 58.7M units shipped and a 17.6% market share - so they are slowly closing in on Samsung who saw some unit growth to 75.5M units and a 22.7% market share.

 Apple continues to struggle - Q2 2019 showed a 18.2% decline in unit sales to 33.8M units with a 10.1% market share...

 At the same time #4 Xaiomi sold 32.3M units and #5 Oppo 29.5M units - so it is very possible that both of these OEMs could surpass Apple in the coming year.  I'm not sure they will do it in 2019 as Apple always has a monster Q4..but it's coming

 If the 3 Chinese firms Huawei, Xaiomi and Oppo had a real presence in the US - I would suspect they would all be bumped up at least 1 place.  Combined the 3 sold some 120.5M units or 36% of the 333.2M units sold in Q2.   

 Apple has released the iPhone 11 line and while as always it's a high quality device an evolutionary step forward - many of the other OEMs have very compelling technology and features that just make the iPhone look old.   

 While Apple seems to have held the line on pricing with a top of the line iPhone 11 Pro Max with 512GB of storage at $1449 - so similar to the last few years.  By comparison a Samsung Note10+ with the same 512GB of storage is selling around $1100 and a Huawei Mate 30Pro with 512GB is $1049.  

 Sure Apple is demphasizing the iPhone somewhat and doesn't publish units sales anymore in quarterly reports - but it is having an impact.   iPhone is the cash cow of Apple and the continuing unit sale slide is not being completely made up by iPads, Macs and Services.

 2020 will be interesting as I see two huge catalysts coming.  5G and dual screen/foldable.   Sure the early foldables has been a bust - but even MS recently announced the Surface Duo for Holiday 2020 which is a dual screen Android device and I expect to see more announced in 2020.   It will be interesting to see if Apple goes there.   They may have to....  and changes are that'll be your $2K iPhone...

ASUS RT-AC68U Router & WDS - a nice solution for a large home.

I recently had a newer Asus RT-AC87U Router die.  The wireless chipset never seemed to work well and first the 5Ghz bands started to fail and then the 2.4Ghz failed leaving my 25 wireless device household high and dry. So after some due diligence I decided to replace with 2 of the older RT-AC68U and implement a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) configuration. In the past - I've mentioned an open source router OS called DD-WRT.  The Asus routers come pre-installed with their version of DD-WRT.  Asus does utilize their own UI overtop DD-wrt and overall I do not like nearly as much as the traditional UI - but core dd-wrt capabilities are there.   Additionally you can flash the RT-AC68 with native DD-WRT if your so inclined. Solar Storage - 2023 Update

  A few years back I published a 2 Part post discussing Solar Energy systems.  The discussion focused on all the due diligence and prep work needed and what were some of the key considerations around designing and implementing a solar system. One of the discussion points was around solar storage or batteries.  What were the use cases for batteries and if they were a good investment and should you incorporate them into your design. Back in 2020 - the math around batteries said no - that you wouldn't be able to break even on the cost of a storage system over its normal warranty life of 10 years. So here we are three years later and so I figured it was time to revisit.   There are two primary uses cases for solar storage.    First is what's called peak offset or peak shifting.  This is a concept where you utilize stored solar generation to run your home during what many utilities call Peak Periods that are part of a general category of rate plans known as Time of Day (TOD) plans.

Home Automation Platforms + Matter - Early Observations

For those of us who have been involved in automating homes by adding "smart" devices from light switches to thermostats, cameras, sensors, controllers, etc - there was always a challenge with managing the wide range of devices. While each OEM had their own app that would allow you to control their devices - you'd often end up with anywhere from 4 - 10 apps that were required to manage the entire home.  And depending on your product choices you also had to have hubs to communicate from your Wifi network to other RF networks like Zigbee or Z-Wave.  With many of these "hubs" they had native support across multiple vendors or you had to add plugins or provide specific OEM support.
