Windows 10 Anniversary - 2 More Cumulative Updates

On Aug 9 - MS released two Cumulative updates to Anniversary Edition.

First was Cumulative Update KB3176495 that bumped the build to 14393.51. According to the KB article here are the fixes:
  • Improved reliability for Internet Explorer 11.
  • Addressed issue to keep pen click settings after updating to Windows 10 Version 1607.
  • Addressed issue that may cause Windows 10 Mobile devices to hang after turning Bluetooth on and off very quickly.
  • Security updates to Kernel Mode Drivers, Microsoft Graphics Component, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer 11, and Windows Authentication Methods.
14393.51 was a Production release update so part of the now Current Branch. The update was available for both PC and Mobile.

Only hours later for Insiders a 2nd Cumulative update KB3176931 was released that bumped the build to 14393.67.  This update was also for PC and Mobile and included the following fixes.

  • Addressed issue that causes significantly reduced battery life on Windows Phone when using Bluetooth with “Hey Cortana” feature enabled.
  • Addressed issue that prevents users from completing the out-of-box experience (OOBE) with a local account using Korean characters.
14363.67 also appears to be a prerequisite build to receive Redstone 2 updates.

As always I applied the updates to desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile platforms and experienced no issues.

One area I am happy to report on with Windows Mobile is that the clipboard issues I have been experiencing are now corrected.  I was easily able to copy content from Outlook for example and paste into either Cortana or Edge.  So a big yea there.

But there are some some inconsistencies I have noticed.  For example - in Mobile the the issues with the Outlook live tile not updating properly has returned.

And even though new versions of News, Money, Sports and Weather has been released their live tile updating often gets stale and even launching the app to get fresh content does not correct the problem once the app is closed. The challenge is that often the only recourse is to reboot.  And this occurs on both Mobile and PC.

Finally one annoyance I have had for a while is around printing and specifically HP printer drivers.  I have two HP printers an OfficeJet Pro 8600 AIO and an Envy 7645 AIO.   While both printers work - how Windows 10 handles the drivers is inconsistent.

On most of my machines I was able to allow Windows 10 to find the printers and install the drivers.  However on one - while it found the printer, it stated that it couldn't find the drivers and I had to install the latest HP drivers from their site.

The problem then is that on that one machine I get an HP driver update from Windows Update that tries to install and fails.  I've tried removing all of the HP software, etc - but the problem still exists.   This has been going on for months now and even though I'e turned off driver updates on that machine - it still shows up.

HP AIO printer driver support has also been a bit of a problem with Windows and even though they include "basic" drivers in the OS.  With AIOs being effectively mainstream for HP for years now, I would like to see better cooperation between the two vendors in terms of addressing this.

Bottom line is that from the initial 14393 build of the Anniversary 1607 release - there have already been 4 cumulative updates in .5, .10, .51 and now .67.

I have decided to take several machines out of Insider mode since they are stable and I don't think will see much benefit from Redstone 2.
