Windows Anniversary Update Pain - Web Cams & Freezing

In the weeks following release of the Windows 10 "Anniversary" edition based on build 14393, MS and more importantly it's customers have experienced pain with 3rd Party Web Cams and Freezing.

This has generated a number of press releases, community threads and vendor posts regarding disabling devices or correcting issues.  Even with the most prominent partners like Logitech, there has been a lot of pain.

Similarly many SSD based machines where experiencing freezes and hangs based on certain firmware and driver compatibility issues.

This has gotten to the point - that since it's release on August 2, there have been 6 cumulative updates to the Anniversary edition that have bumped the build number to 14393.103.

Not what MS was expecting for a milestone release like Redstone 1.  When you compare it to the previous milestone release - Threshold 2 back on Nov 5, 2015 it wasn't until Mar 2, 2016 that the patch level build reached 10586.122.

So not the smoothest execution.  Which is a shame.  And while I really like the cumulative update approach that MS is taking over the old individual patch parade, it's still tough for an end user to go through 6 updates in just over 4 weeks on a production release.

MS probably has the most diverse "wall of systems" that they regularly test builds on and so this seems all the more puzzling why the number of issues and associated fixes was as large and rapid as they were.

Hopefully things will settle down in September and will return to the once per month update rhythm.

On the Mobile side the impact was enough that it has delayed the general release of the HP Elite X3.  While there were some early bird inventory sold in Europe and the UK, those users have had to go through a couple of firmware updates and builds to get somewhat stable.   Hopefully MS and HP will get this worked out soon.   I hope for both of their sake that the Elite X3 effort doesn't getting bogged down with issues.

Bottom line is that the Anniversary release was not nearly as a smooth as it should have been and we're still may 2 or 3 builds away from getting to a level of stability that should have been there on Aug 2.
