Windowws 10 Build 17083 - Font Store is in - Sets are out

On Jan 24 - MS released Windows 10 build 17083 to Fast Ring and Skip Ahead Insiders.

Build 17083 main feature upgrade was the addition of a Fonts section to Settings along with the ability get new fonts from the MS Store.  In addition there were improvements to Diagnostics Data Collection & Viewing, Timeline, Quiet Hours, Hello settings, UWP App Properties, Ease of Access, Hyper-V and App permissions.  The build also included nearly 50 bug fixes.   17083 is the precursor to the build for the upcoming Bug Bash scheduled for Feb 2 - 11.

One key feature that will not make the RS4 branch release is Windows Sets.  MS called out specifically that Sets was taken offline as they prepare RS4 for release and will return in future builds.  More on that later..

The build did download and install correctly on my laptop and took slight over an hour.  There were a few points along the way where I thought it might fail - but finished successfully.  My tablet right now is down for repairs and so was unable to update to 17083.

With the Sets announcement that tells me RS4 is feature complete and that all subsequent builds will be bug fix and readiness for release.  Figure sometime in mid to late March.

One thing I did notice with 17074 is that several of the MS apps have gone UWP in preparation for Sets.  For example apps like MSN News, Money even Mail - showed a tab section at the top and you can add a new tab.

The question here is that UWP Apps in my opinion are very similar to browser apps in the they appear to be driven by Edge components on the back end and navigation is very similar.  So the question here is do I really want a lot of my apps to be Edge driven ?

What I did not experience was the full Sets functionality and integration with apps like Office - even though I'm an Office Insider.

There is some unique potential there - but we'll have to wait for RS5 or whatever they call the next branch.

When you look at the results so far of the RS4 branch - you came break it down to the following...

  1. Fluent Design Applied to Start Menu, Action Center, and a few other areas
  2. The addition of the Timeline feature
  3. More control panel items moved to Settings
  4. ARM based Always Connected PC support
But we also lost some things...
  1. Groove Music Service although the app remains
  2. Sets feature
Overall RS4 provides minor updates to the Fall Creators Update - and for some folks you may barely notice the differences.

Now we march to release - probably 10 builds away..   so around 17140 or so..
