Windows 10 Build 14372 - PC & Mobile - why ?
Just one day and one build after the release of 14371 - MS released build 14372 to Fast Ring Insiders for both PC & Mobile. But I have to ask the question why?
The official blog post called out some statistics regarding a large number of Quests and Feedbacks in recent days as a part of the June Bug Bash campaign there was only a mention of a brief number of fixes - but not what they actually were. There was only provided a very short list of Known Issues and mention of EverNote Clipper for Edge - yawn.
As with any Insider - I look forward to new builds that continue to move forward towards the Anniversary release - but without an understanding of what really changed and therefore what to provide feedback on just doesn't make sense.
Is build 14372 the release build ? I don't think so. I think we'll see that soon probably just after 4th of July holiday.
As with all builds - I installed across a portfolio of PCs, Laptops, Tablets and Phone. The upgrade was clean with no issues. But there was nothing I saw different from 14371.
14372 is the 7th - yes 7th release in June - and while there has been a very nice set of improvements since 14356 which brought us most closer to a production ready release - I have to question this one simply due to the lack of transparency around what fixes were included.
Is Redstone 1 ready to go ? Yes I'd say that outside of some known issues specifically around WiFi that Redstone 1 is very close. It is head and shoulders better than the initial Windows 10 release (build 10240) and I would certainly recommend going there.
If you have been on the wait and see list regarding Windows 10 PC and want to take advantage of the free upgrade offer - I would definitely make the move now. This means you will upgrade initially to the Threshold 2 milestone build of 10586.422 - but then almost immediately get Redstone 1 - which has continued to build on the Windows 10 platform and is an improvement. If you wait past July 29 - most likely you'll never upgrade.
The new reality of Windows is that the OS in effect is a never ending story, a modern approach to a constant stream of fixes and improvements towards a milestone (i.e. Redstone 1) release with then next branch starting up immediately afterwards.
While some don't like the "whole new build" approach - I think it is a dramatic improvement over the old patch flood. If you've ever had to rebuild a PC from scratch from a release ISO and then have to wait for 400+ patches to be applied you'll see the value immediately.
The milestone period between Threshold 2 (10585 Build) and Redstone 1 has been around 9 months. If that pace is maintained for Redstone 2 - this means a projected release date of sometime in late March or April of 2017 - which is consistent with Microsoft announcements.
At this point I expect to see one more Fast Ring release in early July which will be the Production release and then similar to the transition from Threshold 2 to Redstone 1 branch see an initial release about 3 weeks later Mid August.
