Windows 10 Build 10295 - PC and Mobile - a small collection of bug fixes

On Mar 25, MS released Windows 10 Build 14295 for both PC and Mobile to Fast Ring Insiders.

With PC and Mobile now sharing the same build numbers it looks like PC and Mobile releases will be simultaneous going forward.

Installed 14295 on a traditional desktop, 8" tablet and a Lumia 735.  In all cases the update downloaded quickly - but it did take nearly an hour for the Tablet and Phone to prepare the update and apply.

I also noticed with 14295 Mobile that the post update file migration phase was reduced from the normal 22 steps to 7.  Since MS did not call out anything specific I can only hope that they have consolidated the steps since my previous experience was that many of the 22 steps would just flash by as though nothing was being done.

The focus of 14295 appears to be bug fixes from 14291 - so here is the list for PC fixes

  • We fixed the issue that was causing PCs to freeze when plugging in an Xbox One or Xbox 360 controller and other gamepads.
  • We fixed an issue where Microsoft Edge would refresh the tab if you pressed caps lock in a password field.
  • We fixed an issue preventing the Xbox app and other Xbox Live enabled apps and games from signing in.
  • We have fixed the driver bug that prevents Kaspersky Anti-Virus, Internet Security, or the Kaspersky Total Security Suite installed from working as expected in builds from the Development Branch
and for Mobile

  • We fixed the issue where If you reset your phone on Build 14291 and restore your phone from a backup, restore will fail to install apps from your backup’s apps list leaving blank grey titles on Start. You should be able to reset your phone on this build, do a restore from a backup, and have your apps installed and restored appropriately.
  • We fixed an issue where new languages and keyboards were not downloading. However, there is an issue where the “reboot” UX doesn’t appear in the Settings app after downloading a new language or keyboard. You will need to go to Update & security > Phone update and restart your phone manually from there for the new language and keyboard to go into effect.
So since I really wasn't experiencing any of the issues noted for PC - there is a little to report.

As I mentioned in a previous post - the Redstone branch is now available for legacy devices like my Lumia 735 and I noticed an immediate improvement in speed and stability over 10586.164 - so I highly recommend moving to the Redstone Development Branch on Windows Insider and upgrading if you have a supported device.

I may try the first phone fix since I am experiencing the blank tile situation they mention.  I've been through several 10586 and now Redstone builds since the last hard reset I've performed - so may be worth the shot.

With us being effectively half-way through the Redstone 1 branch - I am wondering how many "new features" will be introduced in the coming months or will the focus of Redstone builds will now be more bug fixing...
