Windows 10 Mobile - Build 10586.122 - Is is soup yet ?

On March 2nd - MS released Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.122.  According to the Windows blog - here are the issues addressed..

  • Improved Kanji input experience while using Continuum.
  • Improved the speed in which thumbnails appear for portrait videos.
  • Improved Internet Sharing on select mobile network configurations.
  • Fixed an issue in Microsoft Edge that prevented Word Flow input on some sites.
  • Fixed an issue that previously prevented the option to “Close all Tabs” in Microsoft Edge from closing all open tabs.
  • Improved IMS registration on select mobile network configurations.
  • Fixed an issue where adding your MSA during OOBE would fail and prevent the account from being re-added after the failure.
  • Improved the email sync experiences when connecting to Wi-Fi networks with a captive portal.
  • Improved data connection profiles for dual SIM devices.
  • Updated background processing of multiple changes to improve battery life of devices.
  • Improved quality of video record to SD memory cards.
  • Improved video recording audio in some cases.
  • Improved overall OS reliability, including reliability of the Start screen, app updates, and the Windows Feedback app
  • Improved Alarm reliability.

The approach to getting this build also changed and I was not 100% sure initially that is would work on my Lumia 735.  The blog announcement of the release focused on Lumia 950/950XL, 550 and some additional phones from MCJ, BLU and Alcatel - but did not mention legacy Lumia.

First - since this release was based on the "Current Branch" - meaning Threshold - you had to change your membership in Windows Insider from Fast to Release Preview.  Then Phone Update would download and install.

I've noticed with the new Windows Insider app - that changing back to the Fast Ring role forces an update that includes a turn gears style update then and reinstall of several apps

While the download was relatively quick the Install Prep phase of the update was very slow - taking over 30 minutes - the actual update itself took about 10 - 12 min.

From an overall performance perspective .122 is a nice improvement over .107 which was released back on Feb 10.

I do still see however some glitches that have been carrying over from previous builds

  • I still see "blank" icons in the All Apps menu and this is for MS apps not 3rd party
  • The Insider Hub app shows but fails to launch - you can uninstall it but then when you go to the Store to reinstall it's not listed.

All of the "standard" apps seem to work fine - so People, Mail, Calendar, Messaging, Phone, Camera and the MSN apps like Maps, News, Money, Sports, etc.  OneDrive, Groove and Movies/TV also seem to work fine and I have had no problems with LTE/WiFi or BT networking.

All of the Office Mobile apps work fine as well with good integration with OneDrive - and Outlook does a better job now of dealing with OneDrive attachments.

The .122 build was also to address some of the 8.1 upgrade issues - but I have decided that I will avoid going back to 8.1 for a while.   I'd like to see how the consistent application of cumulative updates plays out.

But the only elephant in the room is that MS effectively missed the date for providing Windows 10 Mobile production update to the field.  Looking back through the Windows Blog - I saw no new statements regarding a revised date for Production release.

.122 is an improvement over .107 and I would say is much closer to production ready release than Windows 10 10240 build was last summer.   So the hope is that maybe the next release will be production and that folks like me with unlocked devices will get it directly.

Another MS announcement reported by several sites was that MS would begin releasing firmware updates via Windows Update and that it was to begin today March 3.  It will be interesting to see if MS will provide firmware updates for legacy devices.  So far none for my 735.

So now the wait begins for Production release and then a further wait to see if indeed legacy Lumia Mobile devices will follow the Redstone path.
