PC Sales in US Show Growth - Is Windows 10 starting to move the needle ?

Today IDC released it's initial Q2 PC Sales numbers for the US which showed some surprising growth numbers by the Big 3 OEMS, HP, Dell and Lenovo.

Overall US sales grew 4.9% to just over 17M units with each of the big 3 showing double digit gains.  The loser this quarter was Apple who experienced a 7.6% decline in sales.  IDC made an interesting comment regarding Apple in that it's line appeared aged when compared to the latest offerings by the big 3.

Considering the broad portfolio of new offerings from the big 3, especially around the new 6th Gen Core CPU and DDR4 RAM, and a new round of ultrabooks, the Big 3 have definitely caught Apple in terms of innovation.  Three years ago I reviewed an Apple Macbook Air which at the time was the state of the art in ultrabook.  Today there are many alternative choices especially in the new 2 in 1 format and in many cases with better specs at a lower cost

This is especially true at the lower end of the market.  Today, you can buy a new 13.3" 1920x1080p 2-in-1 laptop with 4GB of RAM a 500GB HD and a Core i3-6100U for less than $500.  If your willing to go up $150 - $200 - you can go i5-6200, with a 192GB SSD and even 8GB of RAM.

Dell and HP have been swapping the #1 position in recent quarters and HP won Q2 with 27.9% share selling 4.74M units and Dell with 25.8% selling 4.40M units.  Lenovo is a distant 3rd 14% share and Apple rounds out the top 4 with a 11.2% share.

#5 Acer actually experienced the largest overall growth at 16% albeit on a much smaller share of 5.2%.  A lot of that growth was due to strong Chromebook sales.

Finally there is the "Others" category which are a combined total of 15.9% share and sold about 2.9M units which was a 14.4% drop in sales over Q2 of 2015.

This confirms the further levels of consolidation in the PC space.  I expect to see more and more of the smaller firms drop out of the market.

IDC does not call out MS Surface sales.  Typically Surface devices actually get counted in the Tablet category versus PC.

IDC also called out stronger corporate sales as companies begin refreshing and at the MS WWPC in Toronto, MS again confirmed the 350M+ Windows 10 devices and brought up a few customers who specifically called out their Windows 10 upgrade paths.

So it appears as though Windows 10 on the corporate side is beginning to influence PC Sales - at least here is the US.

Globally, PC sales fell 4.5% to 62.36M units from 65.29M in the same period last year. Of the top 5, HP Dell and Asus saw increased sales by 5.2%, 4.1% and 5.4% respectively while Lenovo and Apple saw a decrease in sales by 2.3% & 8.3% respectively.

IDC called out that another potential sales catalyst was the upcoming end to the Windows 10 free upgrade and that many may have just decided to buy a new machines versus upgrade.

It will be interesting to see how Q3 pans out with that free upgrade period ending.

Another set interesting announcements that came out of the MS WWPC was A) around some interesting Windows 10 E3/E5 licensing models combined with O365 and Security & Mobility offerings as well as B) a Surface Leasing model combined with the same E3/E5 offerings.  MS is trying to make it easier and easier to one-stop shop a combination of endpoint and backend capabilities via the cloud through MS and partners.

Bottom line is this, PC sales in the US grew for the first time in the last several years potentially paced by Windows 10.  With Windows 7 now almost exactly 7 years old, and many companies moving to cloud based services like O365, there is potential for a burst in PC sales here is the US driven by Windows 10 in Q3/Q4 and 2017.
