Windows 10 Anniversary Upgrade Process - Houston - we have a problem.

On Friday, July 29 - MS annouced the release of Windows 10 Anniversary Upgrade to the the Windows Insider Release Preview ring.  This was part of the preparations for Aug 2 and also allowed those who were not interesting in getting all of the intermediate builds in Redstone to get the upgrade a few days early.

Of all of the machines in my home, I intentionally left one at the Threshold 2 1511 10586 based release from November.  It was my wife's machine and I knew she would not tolerate getting the high frequency of new builds that the Fast Ring provided.

She did get all of the Cumulative Upgrades and so was at 10586.494 as of July 29.

So I decided to go ahead with the upgrade.

But it was not as smooth as I expected.

My wife's MS account was registered as an Insider - so I went into Settings and turned on Insider and entered her account info.

But almost immediately I ran into a problem, where Windows kept stating that "Your Security Settings need Attention to get Windows 10 Insider Builds".  And while it provided a "Fix me" option which I had to confirm then restart, the problem remained. Even after several attempts.

So I figured okay - my MS account was working correctly, so I added my MS account to the machine as Administrator, rebooted, logged in as me and tried again...

Same Problem...   Ouch....

I then started digging through feedback hub and communities and came across Windows Update being a potential issue.  To repair you have to go through one of the following 2 methods:

Method 1:

  • Check whether the Windows date and Time set to Automatic and synced.
  • Disconnect all the peripheral devices except for the mouse and keyboard.
  • Update all your computer's drivers from manufacturer’s website.
  • Follow these steps to run the Windows inbuilt troubleshooter:
    • Write Troubleshooting in the search box and hit enter.
    • Click on Troubleshooting tab.
    • Click on view all option on the upper left corner.
    • Select the Windows Update option from the list.
    • Click Next to run theTroubleshooter.
  • E. Try to use the Windows Update troubleshooter and see if it helps.
  • Link http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/troubleshoot-problems-installing-updates#1TC=windows-8  (Also applies to Windows 10)

Method 2:

If the issue still remains, try manually reset the Windows Updates Components once again and then reinitiate the Windows Update process.
Resetting Windows Update Components will fix corrupt Windows Update Components and help you to install the Windows Updates quickly.
Please follow the below steps to reset the Windows Updates Components:

  • Press Windows Key + X on the keyboard and then select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the menu.
  • Stop the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.
    • net stop wuauserv
    • net stop cryptSvc
    • net stop bits
    • net stop msiserver
  • Now rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folder. You can do this by typing the following commands in the Command Prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.
    • ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
    • ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
  • Now, let’s restart the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. Type the following commands in the Command Prompt for this. Press the ENTER key after you type each command.
    • net start wuauserv
    • net start cryptSvc
    • net start bits
    • net start msiserver
  • Type Exit in the Command Prompt to close it and then restart the computer.
  • After restarting the computer, now retry to install Windows Updates Ref: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058
Unfortunately neither worked.

I eventually fixed the situation by
  • Logging in first as my wife and then myself and Stopping Insider Builds permanently - which required 2 reboots.
  • Logging is as me and requesting Insider Builds and leaving the level at Release Preview.  It finally took..
What I can't say 100% is if the issue was local to the machine or something with Windows Insider service activation.

I then had let the machine set for a few hours for the Insider process to work it's course.

I finally was able to request an Update and low and behold Windows Insider Preview 14393 showed up and I was able to successfully update her machine.

The install went smoothly and what was interesting is the build immediately showed up as 14393.5 - so the cumulative update was integrated.

Bottom line is this - MS released Windows 10 Anniversary to the Release Preview ring for Insiders.  If you run into issues attempting to activate Insider Builds - I recommend - stopping builds permanently - then re-activating at Release Preview level.
