Windows 10 Build 14946 - Inching Forward

On Oct 13, MS released Winodws 10 Redstone 2 branch build 14946.  This was for both PC and Mobile.

This install both downloaded and installed on all my test devices (PC, Laptop, Tablet and Phone) correctly - albeit somewhat slowly.  Especially with my phone.

The post install store updates to apps to an exceeding long time and at one point every major app would fail to launch. From Mail/Calendar People, Camera, etc - you name it it would fail at launch.  I was thinking that I may have to do a reset to gain back control, however after about 30 minutes the apps began to respond.  I waiting about an hour and then rebooted the phone and all apps began working.

Although MS called out that the upgrade may fail on mobile devices with multiple speech packs installed, my Lumia 735 did install okay.

From a feature/capability perspective, the focus on this build was improved touchpad settings and gesture control as well as improved WiFi control.

There were some additional improvements to Hyper-V, Dictionary and Auto-Correct and correction of some some video de-coding issues.

To me the overall progress on Redstone 2 has been methodical.  Noting too existing, but slow and continuous improvements, especially around settings, etc.

Some of the native apps have also been getting regularly updated - but your overall experience has not changed much.

When I switch back to some of my other machines running Redstone 1 release - you don't feel as though anything has really changed.  This was much different than the Threshold 2 to Redstone difference.

One area that has been making the enthusiast blogs out there is that MS is working to finally remove much of the legacy control panel and property settings UI that have been with MS for over a decade and integrate them into the new settings app.  This is long overdue.   Still with Windows 10 there are some UI components and functions that harken back to Windows XP.  If Windows 10 is to feel like a truly modern OS, the legacy stuff has to go.  So we'll see how this progresses in the months ahead.
